The Aechmea Fasciata, also known as the silver vase or urn plant, is a species of flowering plant in the bromeliad family. At the plant’s center is a small well-like structure that is vital to its existence. If the well dries up or over flows, the beautiful & distinctive flower along with the plant quickly dies. Other pockets exist within the A. Fasciata outside of the well, with varying degrees of seclusion - home to a myriad of different ecosystems.

3D abstractions

Before designing the final plaza, a series of physical and rendered models were created - each further abstracting the plant. This plaza’s design stems from the importance of the well structure for the plant, as well as the many layers that make up the Aechmea Fasciata. Designed as a space for people to relax and interact with nature in a curated but unobtrusive way, the plaza creates both open and imtimate spaces so that visitors might create their own intimate spaces.
